Course Details

Summary: When talking with people we disagree with, it’s natural to take a defensive stance.  We’re trained to defend our views and prove our points. That approach is fine when we’re in school but in the real world, talking to family, friends, and co-workers, it sets us up as adversaries.  It destroys relationships. This course introduces the skills you need to gracefully navigate contentious conversations. You’ll learn to listen in a way that reduces tension and to share your thoughts and opinions in a way that leads to understanding – skills that will enhance all the relationships in your life.

Goals for the Learner:

  • Be aware of when you are showing up as your best self and when you are not.
  • Manage your personal reactivity using mindfulness techniques.
  • Listen with a curious, open mind, even when what you hear makes you uncomfortable.
  • Share your views in a way that gets others to want to listen.
  • Appreciate other people’s moral stance, even when yours is different.
  • Recognize when your conversation partners will be able to adapt to a more civil, respectful style and when they will not.

Why is the content important? The key to getting along with others lies in our ability to talk with them, even when we disagree.

Type of Learner: You are an adult who is ready to show up as your best self in every conversation.
